WART (மரு)

Wart is a common skin condition caused by a virus, HPV. Usually asymptomatic, but when it occurs in the soles then you are gone. The pain is so excruciating similar to a stone stuck in your shoe while walking.

Broadly, warts can be of 2 types:

  1. Cutaneous wart - seen commonly over hand, soles, face
  2. Ano-genital wart - seen over genital area / anal region


There are an armamentarium of treatment modalities.

The treatment modality is based on patient's requirements since 65% and 95% of warts go into self-resolution by the 2nd and 4th year respectively.

Some of the treatment modalities commonly available are:

  • Topical keratolytic/retinoids
  • Caustics
  • Podophyllin
  • Cryotherapy
  • Electrosurgery
  • Intralesional Immunotherapy
  • Laser
  • Oral drugs
  • Psychological methods
The treatment modality should be decided based on the type of wart, location, presence/ absence of pain, etc.

PRECAUTIONS:
Cutaneous wart is spread by direct contact. So, avoid sharing towels, clothes, toiletries
Anogenital wart in adults is mainly acquired by sexual contact. So, stick on to safe sexual practices.
Autoinoculation - the spread of wart from one part of the skin to another part in the same person. Avoid scratching
